Before beginning to lay any tiles, it is a good idea to open several boxes and mix the tiles so that the colours will be evenly distributed.

Laying tiles

The tiles can be laid on a layer of mortar; the tiles should be soaked in clean water for 10 minutes, then drained. If the tiles are laid on adhesive (e.g. Biacolle or other) or adhesive mortar on an existing concrete layer, they should not be soaked. You can also lay tiles on an existing tile floor.

Choose a light grout (stone coloured or white), which should be 5-6 mm (2/10 to ¾ in.). Before applying the grout to the joints, a terracotta wax product like CourboissyTrix should be applied evenly with a roller or a brush, being careful not to drip or apply it to the edge of the tiles.

The joints should be filled (with Biajoint for example) a minimum of 24 hours after the tiles are laid using a pure cement slip or a cement slip with mortar. You should work small areas at a time (5 to 6 sq. m., or 50 to 60 sq. ft.) and make sure to fill the joints evenly. Let this dry for about 20 minutes, then wipe the tiles clean with water and a sponge.

If there are any traces of cement left on the tiles, particularly at the angled edges, you should clean it with a product like Procim, scrubbing vigorously, and then rinse well with water.

Upkeep and cleaning

Terracotta should be allowed to dry for three weeks after the tiles are laid; during this time the floor should not be cleaned with water and you should be careful to avoid staining it with grease or oil. As it dries, a cement film or laitance will form on the tiles. Simply brush the tiles or sweep them using a stiff broom. Then you may use a product like Courboissyhydro to protect your terracotta tiles and care for them with a wax such as Courboissysatine, which is compatible with radiant floor heating systems.
